What is Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc, also known as a slipped or ruptured disc, occurs when the soft inner material (nucleus pulposus) of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tougher outer layer (annulus fibrosus). This can put pressure on nearby nerves, causing pain and discomfort. Herniated discs most commonly occur in the lumbar (lower back) or cervical (neck) regions but can also occur in the thoracic (upper back) region.

What Causes Herniated Disc?

    • Age-related Degeneration: As people age, discs lose their flexibility and elasticity, making them more prone to herniation.
    • Trauma or Injury: Lifting heavy objects improperly, accidents, or falls can cause a disc to rupture.
    • Repetitive Stress: Jobs or activities involving heavy lifting or repetitive bending can increase the risk.
    • Genetics: Some people may inherit a tendency for weaker discs.
    • Obesity: Excess weight puts added pressure on the spine, increasing the risk of disc herniation.
    • Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of exercise can weaken the muscles that support the spine.

Symptoms Of Herniated Disc?

  • Pain: Often in the back, neck, or affected limb.
  • Sciatica: Pain radiating down the leg, often triggered by movement or coughing.
  • Numbness and Tingling: In the arms, hands, legs, or feet.

  • Loss of Reflexes: Reflexes may be diminished or absent in the affected areas.
  • Difficulty Moving: Pain and weakness may make it hard to move or maintain balance.
