What is Thyroid Disorder?
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of your neck. It produces hormones that act like your body’s control center, managing how fast you burn energy (metabolism), how your heart beats, and even how your body grows and develops. These hormones affect nearly every part of your body, making the thyroid a vital player in your overall health.
What Causes Thyroid Disorder?
Thyroid Disorders can happen for many reasons, and sometimes doctors aren’t sure of the exact cause. Here are some common triggers:
- Autoimmune Diseases: Your immune system can sometimes mistake the thyroid for an enemy. In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, it attacks the thyroid, slowing it down (hypothyroidism). In Graves’ disease, it revs the thyroid up too much (hyperthyroidism).
- Iodine Imbalance: Iodine is a key ingredient the thyroid uses to make hormones. Too little iodine (like in some diets) or too much (from certain supplements or medicines) can cause problems.
- Medications: Drugs like lithium, used for mental health conditions, can interfere with thyroid function.
- Radiation Therapy: If you’ve had radiation for cancers in the head or neck, it might damage the thyroid.
- Congenital Issues: Some people are born with a thyroid that doesn’t work properly or is missing altogether.
- Pituitary Problems: The pituitary gland in your brain tells the thyroid what to do. If it’s not working right, the thyroid can get off track.
Signs And Symptoms Of Thyroid Disorder?
The symptoms of a Thyroid Disorder depend on whether your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism). Here’s what to watch for:
Symptoms of Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid):
- Feeling tired or weak all the time
- Gaining weight or struggling to lose it
- Feeling cold when others don’t
- Dry skin and brittle hair
- Hair falling out
- Constipation
Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid):
- Losing weight without trying
- Feeling hot when others don’t
- Sweating more than usual
- Shaky hands or tremors
- Feeling anxious, nervous, or irritable
- Fast or uneven heartbeat
