Obesity : An Overview
Obesity is a medical condition characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat that can adversely affect health. It is commonly defined by an individual’s Body Mass Index (BMI), with a BMI of 30 or higher being classified as obese. Obesity increases the risk of various chronic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
Types of Obesity
Central Obesity
( Abdominal Obesity)
Involves the accumulation of fat around the abdomen and is often referred to as "apple-shaped" obesity. This type is strongly linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
Peripheral Obesity
(Gluteofemoral Obesity)
Involves the accumulation of fat around the hips, thighs, and buttocks, often described as "pear-shaped" obesity. While this type of obesity is generally less risky for heart disease, it can still lead to metabolic disturbances.
Genetic Obesity
Caused by genetic factors that influence metabolism and fat storage, often seen in families with a history of obesity.
Endocrine Disorders
Some conditions like hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and Cushing’s syndrome can lead to weight gain and obesity due to hormonal imbalances.
Lifestyle Factors
The most common type of obesity, which results from poor dietary choices, sedentary lifestyle, excessive calorie intake, and lack of physical activity.

Obesity is typically caused by an interaction of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. These include:
- Poor Diet:-High consumption of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods, including fast food, sugary beverages, and processed snacks.
- Physical Inactivity:- Sedentary lifestyle with little physical activity, leading to an imbalance between calorie intake and energy expenditure.
- Genetic Factor:- Genetic makeup can influence metabolic rate, fat storage, and the distribution of fat in the body. Family history can play a role in the likelihood of becoming obese.
- Hormonal Imbalances:- Conditions like hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), Cushing‘s syndrome, and PCOS can contribute to weight gain or make it difficult to lose weight.
- Psychological Factors:- Emotional eating, stress, depression, and anxiety can lead to overeating or unhealthy food choices as a coping mechanism.
